Spencer Lewis
Twenty years ago, Spencer Lewis wrote and recorded a series of pastoral, instrumental guitar pieces that became his first album Weeding the Garden. It was produced in his home studio on an eight track reel to reel recorder and the first release for his own independent label, Quartz Recordings.
Inside the liner notes of Weeding the Garden there
was a special credit: "to Woody Guthrie whose simple star guides me
on." Now, fifteen titles later and over 130,000 units sold, it's that
simplicity that is still the backbone of his recordings.
The
rich tone of Spencer's acoustic steel-stringed guitar and his
'trademark' layered violins, combine to create the unmistakeable Spencer Lewis signature sound.
His
uncomplicated yet intriguing compositions, inspired from living close
to the land in his home state of Vermont, are a blend of Classical,
American Folk, and just plain good old fashioned music with a modern
twist. Unpretentious and relaxed, the 'back porch' nature of Spencer
Lewis Music seems to strike a chord in all who listen. Over the years, Spencer has added numerous titles to his catalog while still maintaining the famous "Spencer Lewis Sound".
